Caroline's Light Up a Life story

Dedicate in memory this year and let the light of your love shine

It’s our pleasure to invite you to dedicate a light in memory of your loved one this year and to join us as we get together to remember all our loved ones who have died, as we welcome you to this year's Light up a Life appeal.

Light Up a Life has a special meaning for Caroline Johnson, who remembers her loving mum, Jean Kirkpatrick

Caroline Johnson and Mum"My mum always made a massive fuss at Christmas, her decorations were amazing and her table was beautiful. We all filled her living room and opened our presents together, she loved watching her grandchildren open their presents.

Sadly, mum knew Christmas 2007 would be her last and so she put extra thought and care into everything.  Despite her being ill she didn’t show it, if anything it was even more special.

Jean KirkpatrickMum had been attending the hospice for different therapies, she loved them and was very grateful. She had seen Light Up a Life advertised and suggested we go. We attended the parish church together, mum absolutely loved it, especially the children singing the carols. Mum thought the service was lovely and a wonderful idea.

Sadly, Mum passed away in July 2008.  Christmas 2008 was strange and very difficult, I had to step up and take on the role of my mum which was hard.

I used to love buying presents and spoiling her because she deserved it. Not being able to buy for her was difficult, so I thought it would be a nice idea if I donated the money I would spend to the hospice.

Now every year I dedicate a light to my mum and every year my children and I attend the service. It’s lovely because I attended one of the services with my mum and now we can go and remember mum & Nanna together."

Last year we were with you online and via the radio with our Light Up a Life virtual service, and that proved to be wonderful thing as we reached people far and wide. So we decided to do the same again this year.
