Shed-tastic sleepover to help raise funds for Bolton Hospice

An inspiring 12-year-old, Evie, has used her summer holiday to raise much-needed funds for Bolton Hospice, in an unusually challenging way.

Evie undertook a week-long stay in her garden shed to raise vital funds in memory of her beloved Auntie Abigail, known affectionately to the family as ‘Wonder Woman’.

Determined to honour her auntie's memory, Evie decided to spend a week living in her garden shed, foregoing all of life’s luxuries and taking on household chores such as cooking and washing outside.

Evie was inspired to raise money for Bolton Hospice after her Auntie Abigail, received care from the hospice team during her final weeks. Abigail, who was diagnosed with a rare form of Gorlins syndrome at a young age and received treatment for multiple brain tumours throughout her life.

In early 2023, another brain tumour was found and, knowing it was untreatable, Abigail spent as much time in her final 12 months doing as much as possible with friends and family.

“Abigail’s final few weeks were spent at Bolton Hospice,” said Evie’s mum, Ruth, “The team there were incredible, kind, and caring. They went out of their way to make Abigail feel as comfortable as possible, day and night. As Abigail had already been attending the Wellbeing Hub for several months, coming to the hospice really felt like a home away from home.”

Explaining why she decided to take on her challenge, Evie said, “After Auntie Abigail died I decided I’d like to raise some money to help other people like her. At the start of my summer holidays I lived in the garden shed, made my own meals outside and washed all my clothes outside as well. I hadn’t done anything like it before but I had Lenny, my dog, for company, and Auntie Abigail’s old teddy stayed with me in the shed too.”

With unwavering determination and the support of her family and friends, Evie far exceeded her initial goal of £500, raising an incredible £1395 for Bolton Hospice.
