Joanne's volunteer story

Joanne has volunteered with Bolton Hospice as a Bereavement Support Volunteer for just over 12 months.

“As a Bereavement Support Volunteer I have one to one sessions with people who have lost loved ones and support them though the different stages of grief, ensuring a safe, confidential space for them to discuss their feelings and emotions.

“I decided to start volunteering as, unexpectedly, I spent quite some time at the hospice in a very short space of time, losing both my parents within 5 months of each other. They were both cared for by the hospice team everyone was truly amazing. I knew I wanted to become part of the hospice community, and I really wanted to be there to support others who were experiencing grief.

“I love volunteering here. I’m passionate about helping others - it’s in my nature - and if I can make a difference to just one person then I’m happy with that.  My favourite part about volunteering is just knowing I’m there for people, knowing someone cares, and listening to them share their life stories about their loved ones.”
