Sam's volunteer story

“I started volunteering because my grandad was a patient at the hospice, and he loved it. I’d just finished my degree and had some time on my hands, so I thought it was the perfect time to volunteer, and know that I’m helping people just like my grandad.

Sam, volunteerEven though I initially started volunteering just to help, I’ve definitely found that volunteering here has increased my employability, just from the different skills I’ve picked up and the experience I’ve gained. It’s actually helped me to get my first job out of uni!

The diverse range of people you interact with – other volunteers, staff, patients, customers – means you’re always learning new things. People skills, teamworking, communication, emotional resilience… There’s been so much to learn and it’s always so rewarding.

I’d 100% recommend volunteering with Bolton Hospice to anyone, but especially to other young people, as it’s so varied what you can do here, and it really does help you as much as you’re helping them.”
