Yvonne Weatherhead M.B.E. has been writing children’s books for many years and was previously the headteacher of Marland Hill Primary in Rochdale from 1990 to 2014. Presently, she is an educational consultant and supports children through workshops with her own children’s books.

On an annual basis, Yvonne writes a Christmas ‘Flying Grandma’ poem, with all funds raised being sent to Bolton Hospice.

Yvonne’s ‘Flying Grandma’ poems are inspired by the stories she creates with her grandchildren.

In the story poem, Flying Grandma has one important mission on Christmas Eve, to fly to any child or animal who needs her help.

Animals may be in danger or children may not be ready for Christmas, so she takes with her Bella and Tess her faithful border collie dogs. She sets off in her silver chariot, with her silver handbag, silver shoes and silver wings and is guided by her magical silver compass. In her silver handbag she carries, her magical rainbow dust. She sprinkles this from her flying silver chariot, to find excited children everywhere, to help stimulate, happy Christmas dreams .It lands on their noses and tickles their faces.

This year's story takes her to a whale in danger in Scotland and also two children, living in a lighthouse in Wales, who are not ready for Christmas.

Bella and Tess have important jobs to complete, to ensure children and animals are safe and happy and to spread some Christmas cheer.
