Roles available at the hospice

Within the hospice, we have a number of different volunteer roles to choose from, so there really is something to suit everybody. Whether you see yourself directly supporting patients on our inpatient unit or at our Wellbeing Hub, helping to maintain our beautiful Garden of Tranquility, or welcoming visitors on one of our reception desks, we have a role for you!

Inpatient unit volunteer

Our inpatient unit relies on caring and dedicated volunteers to help to make our patients feel at home whilst they're staying with us. A typical volunteer shift might see you making drinks for patients and their loved ones, helping to serve meals, and sitting and chatting to those who want a listening ear.

Wellbeing Hub volunteer

Our Wellbeing Hub is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, offering flexible, drop-in support sessions to local people with life-limiting illnesses. As a Wellbeing Hub volunteer, you'll be helping to set up, meeting and greeting new patients, helping with refreshments, joining in activities and generally giving attention and support to patients.

Reception volunteer

As a volunteer receptionist, you'll be answering the phone, taking messages to pass on, welcoming and appropriately directing visitors, and undertaking general clerical duties when necessary. We have various reception volunteer shifts available to cover our main reception on evenings and weekends, as well as our Wellbeing Hub and Giles House receptions on weekdays.

Spiritual Care volunteer

Our Spiritual Care Lead has a team of valued spiritual care volunteers whose role is to provide pastoral, spiritual and religious care and support to our patients, their loved ones, carers and staff. They build up strong relationships by listening and empathising with the patients they interact with and have a good knowledge of spiritual issues.

Bereavement Support volunteer

As a Bereavement Support volunteer at Bolton Hospice, you'll hold support sessions with people who are dealing with a bereavement, helping them through life's most difficult situations.  These sessions are done on a 1:1 basis as well as group sessions.

Garden volunteer

Put your green fingers to use making sure the scene outside of the hospice windows is a welcoming and eye-catching one! Our garden volunteers maintain our hospice grounds and gardens on a weekly basis, ensuring they look tidy and attractive for all visitors and patients.

Mascot volunteer

One of the most fun volunteer roles available at Bolton Hospice is donning a wonderful costume and becoming Cyril the Squirrel at our fundraising events. Cyril is responsible for entertaining crowds and guests at events, the occasional photo-call and generally spreading joy wherever he goes.

Events And Collections volunteer

Events and Collections volunteers help with bucket collections, bag packs and manning stalls at community events on an ad hoc basis.

Community Fundraising volunteer

As a Community Fundraising volunteer you'll represent and promote the hospice's work in the community, attending events and cheque presentations, manning hospice stalls at community events and inspiring others to fundraise for Bolton Hospice.

**Please note that hospice volunteer opportunities can often be oversubscribed, whilst we are always in need of volunteers to help raise vital funds in our shops. Student applications are currently closed until further notice.

Could you consider one of our many different shop volunteer opportunities, from roles on the shop floor, to PAT testers, eBay administrators, cafe assistants and more!?**
